By:Elizabeth A. Wheeler
Published on 2001 by

In the postwar era, American urban fiction was dominated by the imagery of containment. Across the fictional landscape, the city was divided into segregated zones, marked by the threat of inevitable violence. In Uncontained, Elizabeth A. Wheeler offers a critiQue of this familiar story -- evident in the noir narratives of James M. Cain and in work by Ellison, Roth, Salinger, Percy, Capote, and others -- and challenges its link to the postwar city. Discussing film, short stories, and novels from many American cities, Wheeler integrates these stories of containment into a shared pattern and reads them across a broad spectrum of works by men and women of various ethnic and literary traditions to reveal a larger vision of postwar America. Knowing that containment is never the entire story, Wheeler shows how the uncontained has shaped the historical moment as well. She places these literary counterstories in dialogue with those of the alienated man, the war veteran, and noir detective, and revives the idea of urban space as a place of openness. By bringing Ann Bannon's lesbian pulp fiction, or the work of Hisaye Yamamoto, Chester Himes, Jo Sinclair, and others to bear on more canonical texts, Wheeler offers a more complete understanding of this period of American fiction.

African American Girls PDF
By:Faye Z. Belgrave
Published on 2009-07-24 by Springer Science & Business Media

Over the past 15 years, I have had the opportunityto conduct research and interv- tion programming with African American girls. Several of my graduate students, mostly African American women, pursuing their doctorates in psychology worked closely with me in this work. We have conducted hundreds of literature reviews, read many journal articles and reports, published many papers, and engaged over a thousand African American adolescent girls in a cultural curriculum speci?cally designed for them. This book was written to summarize this work and was c- ceived to be an educational resource for diverse audiences who work with African American girls including: (1) researchers who conduct research and intervention programming; (2) professionals who work with African American adolescent girls such as teachers, social workers, prevention specialists, therapists and counselors, and mental health workers; and (3) a general audience of persons with an interest in African American adolescent female’s well-being and developmentsuch as parents, community leaders, girl’s group leaders (i. e. , Girl Scout leaders), and church and spiritual leaders. This book is both descriptive and practical. Each chapter covers the most current literature on African American adolescent girls, and reviews and discusses ways in which they are similar to and unique from girls in other ethnic groups and from African American boys. An understanding of who they are and how they function allows us to make recommendations about ways to support these girls and to re- cus and/or strengthen already positive attributes.

Critical Essays PDF
By:Emmanuel Sampath Nelson
Published on 1993 by Psychology Press

This pioneering work is the first book to systematically explore the literature of gay and lesbian writers of color in the United States. Critical Essays challenges the marginalization and tokenization of gay men and lesbians of color in the dominant academic discourses by focusing exclusively on the imaginative work of representative Native-American, Asian-American, Latino(a), and African-American gay and lesbian writers. As the first book offering a scholarly assessment of ethnic gay and lesbian writing in the U.S., Critical Essays simultaneously defies ethnic and mainstream homophobia as well as straight and gay/lesbian racism. This deliberate counter to the dominant white discourse of gay and lesbian literature offers a lively contribution to the debate on the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender/sexuality and class in American literature. A wide range of critical approaches, including historical readings, cultural analysis, and deconstructive criticism, is employed to the works of such major literary figures as Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, John Rechy, Paula Gunn Allen, and Gloria AnzaldĂșa. These thought-provoking chapters disrupt the complacent notion of a unified gay/lesbian community by questioning the presumed similarities of persons who share sexual identity. Some of the specific topics explored in Critical Essays include: post-coloniality and gay/lesbian identities emerging Asian-American gay and lesbian writers redefining the Harlem Renaissance from gay perspectives contemporary African-American gay male performance art relocating the gay Filipino This groundbreaking volume will be of immense interest to undergraduate, graduate, and advanced scholars in Gay and Lesbian studies, Women's studies, African-American studies, Asian-American studies, Latino(a) studies and Native-American studies. It will also serve students and scholars as a valuable introduction to the diversity of authors that comprise twentieth-century American literature.

Within the Circle PDF
By:Angelyn Mitchell
Published on 1994 by Duke University Press

Within the Circle is the first anthology to present the entire spectrum of twentieth-century African American literary and cultural criticism. It begins with the Harlem Renaissance, continues through civil rights, the Black Arts Movement, and on into contemporary debates of poststructuralist and black feminist theory. Drawing on a quote from Frederick Douglass for the title of this book, Angelyn Mitchell explains in her introduction the importance for those |within the circle| of African American literature to examine their own works and to engage this critical canon. The essays in this collection--many of which are not widely available today--either initiated or gave critical definition to specific periods or movements of African American literature. They address issues such as integration, separatism, political action, black nationalism, Afrocentricity, black feminism, as well as the role of art, the artist, the critic, and the audience. With selections from Langston Hughes, Sterling Brown, W. E. B. DuBois, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Barbara Smith, Alice Walker, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and many others, this definitive collection provides a dynamic model of the cultural, ideological, historical, and aesthetic considerations in African American literature and literary criticism. A major contribution to the study of African American literature, this volume will serve as a foundation for future work by students and scholars. Its importance will be recognized by all those interested in modern literary theory as well as general readers concerned with the African American experience. Selections by (partial list): Houston A. Baker, Jr., James Baldwin, Sterling Brown, Barbara Christian, W. E. B. DuBois, Ralph Ellison, LeRoi Jones, Sarah Webster Fabio, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., W. Cultures in Babylon PDF
By:Hazel V. Carby
Published on 1999 by Verso

For a decade and a half, since she first appeared in the Birmingham Centre's collective volume The Empire Strikes Back, Hazel Carby has been on the frontline of the debate over multicultural education in Britain and the US. This book brings together her most important and influential essays, ranging over such topics as the necessity for racially diverse school curricula, the construction of literary canons, Zora Neale Hurston's portraits of |the Folk,| C.L.R. James and Trinidadian nationalism and black women blues artists, and the necessity for racially diverse school curricula. Carby's analyses of diverse aspects of contemporary culture are invariably sharp and provocative, her political insights shrewd and often against the grain. A powerful intervention, Culture in Babylon will become a standard reference point in future debates over race, ethnicity and gender.

Designed to meet the needs of high school students, undergraduates, and general readers, this encyclopedia is the most comprehensive reference available on African American literature from its origins to the present. Other works include many brief entries, or offer extended biographical sketches of a limited selection of writers. This encyclopedia surpasses existing references by offering full and current coverage of a vast range of authors and topics. While most of the entries are on individual authors, the encyclopedia gathers together information about the genres and geographical and cultural environments in which these writers have worked, and the social, political, and aesthetic movements in which they have participated. Thus the encyclopedia gives special attention to the historical and cultural forces that have shaped African American writing. - Publisher.

Do the Americas Have a Common Literature? PDF
By:Gustavo PĂ©rez Firmat
Published on 1990 by Duke University Press

This volume takes an important step toward the discovery of a common critical heritage that joins the diverse literatures of North America and Latin America. Traditionally, literary criticism has treated the literature of the Americas as “New World” literature, examining it in relation to its “Old World”—usually European—counterparts. This collection of essays redirects the Eurocentric focus of earlier scholarship and identifies a distinctive pan-American consciousness. The essays here place the literature of the Americas in a hemispheric context by drawing on approaches derived from various schools of contemporary critical thought—Marxism, feminism, culture studies, semiotics, reception aesthetics, and poststructuralism. As part of their search for a distinctly New World literary idiom, the contributors engage not only the major North American and Spanish American writers, but also such “marginal” or “minor” literatures as Chicano, African American, Brazilian, and QuĂ©becois. In identifying areas of agreement and confluence, this work lays the groundwork for finding historical, ideological, and cultural homogeneity in the imaginative writing of the Americas. Contributors. Postcolonial Perspectives on Women Writers from Africa, the Caribbean, and the US PDF
By:Martin Japtok
Published on 2003 by Africa World Press

Combining postcolonial perspectives with race and culture based studies, which have merged the fields of African and black American studies, this volume concentrates on women writers, exploring how the (post) colonial condition is reflected in women's literature. The essays are united by their focus on attempts to create alternative value systems through the rewriting of history or the reclassification of the woman's position in society. By examining such strategies these essays illuminate the diversity and coherence of the postcolonial project.

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of American Literature, explaining different time periods and themes discussed in this book. Ch. 1 then analyzes the British origins of American literature in the 17th and 18th centuries. In Chapter 2 we look at literature produced during the colonial period, up through the American Revolution. We analyze the literature of the 17th and 18th centuries, which included religious Puritan literature, political work and pamphlets, and even the foundation of African American literature. In the first of two chapters about Romantic literature, Chapter 3 tracks the Romanticism Movement, which began in Europe in the 18th century and moved to America in the early 19th century. In this chapter, we look at what influenced the Romantic authors and profile the major Romantic poets, including Longfellow and Poe. In Chapter 4 we look at new forms of American literature that took shape during the Romantic period, including short stories and novels, discussing authors like Hawthorne. Chapter 5 discusses the Transcendentalism movement in American literature that took place in the mid 19th century, looking at what influenced the work of Emerson, Thoreau and Dickinson among others. Chapter 6 discusses the Realism movement in American literature, known for casting off the more formal aspects of its literary predecessors. We discuss the influences and work of authors like Mark Twain. Chapter 7 looks at the early 20th century’s “experimentation” period, in which authors tried new styles and forms of literature. We profile some of the most famous authors and work of the period, including Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Chapter 8 concludes by looking at contemporary American literature, beginning with “postmodernism,” after World War II. Contemporary literature departs from the Romanticism and Realism literature and embraces boldly imaginative work, using new literary devices like paradox. We look at the styles and influences in this final chapter.
